K: Photo — turning accurate CAD models into professional product imagery
K: Photo is an AutoCAD companion plug-in that turns engineering geometry into polished product imagery while keeping the CAD model as the source of truth.
Engineering teams should not have to redraw a product just to present it well
Manufacturers and technical design teams already have the most important part of a product image: the accurate 3D model. The problem is that turning that model into a clean, professional website or marketing image often means exporting into separate visualisation software, rebuilding materials, setting cameras, adjusting lighting and then checking that the finished picture still represents the actual product.
K: Photo is being developed to shorten that process. It runs as an AutoCAD companion plug-in and uses the selected CAD geometry as the source of truth, then builds the photographic treatment around it.
Geometry first, presentation second
The core principle behind K: Photo is simple: product geometry must not be reinvented for the sake of a better-looking image. Holes, slots, bends, plate sizes, component positions and overall proportions come from the CAD model. The render process is responsible for materials, lighting, camera composition and background — not redesigning the product.
That is especially important for engineering and construction products. A marketing image may be used on a technical webpage, datasheet, brochure or quotation, so visual quality cannot come at the expense of engineering accuracy.
- →Selected AutoCAD geometry remains the source of truth
- →Component relationships and product proportions are preserved
- →No generative reconstruction of the engineering product
- →Render treatment is applied around the model rather than replacing it
From CAD model to studio-style product image
K: Photo automates the parts of visualisation that normally take time to set up repeatedly. Once the product geometry is selected, the user can choose the required material, scene, image format and quality. The model is then rendered with controlled lighting and a presentation style intended for websites, brochures, product literature and digital marketing.
For metallic products, the visual challenge is rarely just making something shiny. Stainless steel, galvanised steel, raw steel and powder-coated finishes need different roughness, reflection and lighting behaviour if the image is going to read naturally. K: Photo is designed around those real manufacturing finishes rather than generic CGI surfaces.
- →304 and 316 stainless steel presentation
- →Galvanised and raw steel finishes
- →Black and white powder-coated finishes
- →White and dark studio-style scenes
- →Square, landscape and portrait output formats
Built for technical products, not generic 3D artwork
General rendering tools can produce impressive visuals, but they are not normally built around the needs of an engineering workflow. K: Photo is aimed at products where dimensional relationships and design intent matter: brackets, restraints, masonry support components, fabricated steelwork, fixings and other manufactured assemblies.
The goal is repeatability. A technical team should be able to move from an approved model to a usable product image without creating a second, disconnected visualisation model that then has to be maintained separately.
Traceability matters even in marketing imagery
K: Photo also records validation information alongside the finished render. That can include the source geometry checksum, model dimensions, mesh information, render settings and output details. It gives the team a record of what geometry generated the image and helps distinguish an approved render from an image that may have been created from an older model.
For businesses producing technical literature, that connection between the model and the visual output is valuable. Product imagery becomes part of a controlled workflow rather than an isolated marketing asset.
A natural companion to K: CAD and Krona
K: Photo sits alongside the wider K: CAD and Krona product family. The immediate use is straightforward: create better product imagery directly from engineering CAD. The longer-term opportunity is to connect those outputs to the same projects, product libraries, technical documents and marketing workflows already being developed inside Krona.
That means a product model can eventually support more than drawings alone. The same controlled geometry can contribute to technical documentation, quotations, website product pages, datasheets and marketing content without repeatedly rebuilding the same information in different systems.
Better presentation without compromising the engineering
K: Photo is built around a simple idea: technical products should be presented professionally, but the engineering model must remain authoritative.
By bringing product visualisation closer to AutoCAD and the wider Krona workflow, K: Photo is intended to make high-quality technical imagery faster to produce, easier to repeat and safer to use across commercial and technical material.
